How to Get a Smooth Candle Top
Bumpy, rough, or sunken candle tops are fixable. Learn why soy wax misbehaves, how to prevent it, and how to rescue a finished candle with a heat gun.

You poured your candle, waited overnight, and peeled off the tape, only to find a lumpy, pitted, or sunken surface staring back at you. It's a frustrating moment, especially when the jar looked perfect coming out of the pour pot. The good news: a rough candle top is almost never a wasted candle. It's fixable, and once you understand what caused it, you can usually prevent it on the next batch.
Why Soy Wax Gets a Bumpy or Uneven Top
Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, and that natural origin is exactly what makes it beautiful and tricky at the same time. Unlike paraffin, soy shrinks and contracts as it cools, and it doesn't cool uniformly across the entire surface.
The wax pulls inward as it solidifies. The outer edges touching the glass cool first, while the center stays liquid longer. As the center finally sets, it contracts and sinks, leaving a visible depression or rough patch.
Temperature swings make it worse. If the room is cold, or if a draft hits one side of the candle, the cooling becomes uneven. One half sets fast; the other lags. The result looks like a geological fault line across your candle top.
Fragrance and dye can affect texture too. High fragrance loads (above 10% by weight) can affect how wax binds and crystallizes. Some fragrance oils also cause "frosting," which shows up as a white, powdery bloom on the surface, common with natural soy but sometimes mistaken for a rough texture.
The Difference Between Sinkholes, Rough Tops, and Frosting
These three problems look related but have slightly different causes:
- Sinkholes, a crater in the center; caused by the wax contracting around a column of trapped air or an air pocket near the wick.
- Rough or bumpy surface, uneven texture across the whole top; usually caused by fast or uneven cooling.
- Frosting, white crystalline bloom; a natural characteristic of soy, more cosmetic than structural.

How to Prevent a Rough Top Before You Pour
Prevention is cheaper than repair. These four habits, taken together, will get you consistent smooth tops on most pours.
Preheat Your Containers
Cold glass is one of the biggest culprits. When you pour hot wax into a room-temperature jar (especially in winter, or with a ceramic vessel), the outer wax chills almost instantly while the center stays warm. That temperature gap drives uneven contraction.
A simple fix: set your jars on a baking sheet in a low oven (170°F / 75°C) for about 10 minutes before you pour, then pull them out and pour right away. Alternatively, run the outside of each jar under warm tap water and dry thoroughly. You're not looking to get them hot, just to take the cold edge off.
Pour at the Right Temperature
Every soy wax blend has a recommended pour temperature, typically listed on the manufacturer's spec sheet. For most container soy waxes, that's somewhere between 120°F and 140°F (49–60°C). Pouring too hot leaves more heat that has to escape slowly, increasing the chance of sinkholes and surface cracking. Pouring too cool means the wax starts to set before it fully levels out.
Use a thermometer every time. Eyeballing the color or viscosity of melted wax is not reliable enough. A cheap digital probe thermometer costs less than a ruined batch.

Cool Your Candles Slowly, in Still Air
Set finished candles on a flat, stable surface away from:
- Air conditioning vents
- Open windows with a breeze
- Cold tile floors (raise them on a trivet or cardboard)
- Fans running nearby
The goal is a slow, even drop in temperature. Some candle makers put a cardboard box over cooling candles to trap ambient heat and slow the process. Others move them into a slightly warmer room (say, a closet away from exterior walls). You don't need special equipment, you just need to not rush it.
Candles shouldn't go in the fridge or freezer to speed cooling. Cold air causes rapid contraction and almost guarantees a rough or cracked top.
Pour in Two Stages
A second "top-up" pour is a classic trick for soy candles. Here's how it works:
- Pour your first layer at normal temperature and let it set until the surface looks mostly solid but slightly tacky (usually 2–4 hours depending on room temperature).
- Pour a thin second layer at a slightly lower temperature (about 5–10°F cooler than your first pour) to fill in any depression or rough patch.

How to Fix a Rough Candle Top After It's Already Set
Sometimes you do everything right and the top still comes out bumpy. Maybe the fragrance interacted oddly with the wax, or the room got cold overnight. Here's how to fix it.
The Heat Gun Method (Most Reliable)
A heat gun is the standard tool for surface repairs. It remelts just the top layer of wax without disturbing the body of the candle below.
What you need: A heat gun (a craft-grade model around 300–400°F works well) or a hair dryer on its highest heat setting. A hair dryer takes longer but works fine for surface texture issues.
How to do it:
- Hold the heat gun 4–6 inches above the candle surface.
- Keep it moving in slow, steady circles. Don't hold it in one spot, you'll create a depression or burn the wax.
- Watch for the surface to go glossy and liquid (takes about 15–30 seconds with a heat gun, longer with a hair dryer).
- Once the top is fully melted, set the candle on a flat, level surface and walk away. Let it resolidify on its own.
Safety notes: Hot wax splatter is a real risk if you hold the gun too close or move it too fast. Keep children and pets out of the work area. Never leave a heat gun unattended near wax, paper, or other flammable materials. Keep the gun moving at all times.
The result after one pass is usually a noticeably smoother, glossier top. If you still see a small depression after the wax cools, do a second heat gun pass or follow up with a small top-up pour.
The Top-Up Pour Method (Best for Sinkholes)
If the problem is a genuine sinkhole rather than just surface texture, a heat gun pass alone may not be enough, you're remelting existing wax into the depression, which doesn't add volume.
Instead, melt a small amount of the same wax (even a few tablespoons), let it cool to about 10°F below your original pour temp, and pour a thin layer over the top. This fills the void and, once set, gives you a smooth surface to heat-gun if needed.
